Setting Up

Everything on the Settings Screen

Every field on that screen, alongside your Canary Pages — the pages the daily check looks at: which emails we send, who else gets copied, your time zone, taking your data, what we call your site, moving to a different website, and the address the subscription is under.

What Is on the Settings Screen

Open Settings from the menu down the left of your dashboard. Going down the page you will find:

  • Canary Pages — the pages we look at once a day. It has an article of its own: Choosing Your Canary Pages.
  • Email Preferences, Additional Recipients and Account Email — which emails we send, who else gets them, and the address the subscription is under.
  • Data Exports and Time Zone — taking your numbers away, and which clock the times on screen use.
  • Site Nickname and Website — what we call this site in your dashboard, and how to point the subscription at a different one.
  • Add Another Site — putting a second website on the same bill.

Each one below is a section of that screen, in the same order. Everything saves as you change it; there is no separate save button to press at the end.

Email Preferences

Four switches, under Settings → Email Preferences: when something breaks, when one of your tracked keywords moves, the weekly summary, and the monthly audit. All four start switched on, and each is independent.

The weekly summary is the one people change most often: a short weekly message listing anything still open and when the last check ran — useful if you would rather hear on a schedule than only when something is wrong.

Turning any of them off changes nothing about the work. Your pages are still checked once a day and your keywords every day, and everything we find is on your dashboard either way.

Site Nickname

By default your dashboard and your emails refer to your site by its web address. If you would rather see the business name — because you look after two sites, or because the address is not memorable — set it under Settings → Site Nickname. Up to 40 characters.

This changes only what things are called. It has no effect on what we check, or on any score.

Website: Moving to a Different Site

Settings → Website moves the subscription to a different web address. It is the one control in the dashboard that cannot be undone, so read the consequence before you use it.

The new site starts from nothing
No score, no rank history, no alerts — the same position a new subscription is in.
The old site's history is archived
We do not carry audits or rankings across, because they describe a different website and merging them would produce a chart that is true of neither.
Your settings do not move with it
Searches, questions and Canary Pages describe the old site. Expect to set them up again.

If what you actually want is to cover a second site as well as this one, that is an extra subscription rather than a move — how extra sites are billed.

Account Email

Alerts, audits and every other message go to the address the subscription is under, and the Settings screen shows you which address that is. You can move it to a different one from there, and it takes two steps on purpose.

We send a link to the new address, which has to be clicked before anything moves — that way a typo cannot lock you out of your own dashboard. At the same time we tell the address the subscription is currently under, with a link to stop it. Until the new address confirms, the old one is still in charge.

Your billing email is separate. It lives with our payment provider and is changed there, so moving your SiteCandor address does not change where invoices go.

Additional Recipients

Up to three other people can be copied on whichever emails you have switched on — useful when whoever looks after the site is not the person reading the summary. They get the emails and nothing else: no sign-in, no access to your dashboard, and nothing they can change. To let somebody see the dashboard itself, invite them from Team in the menu instead.

We ask them first. Saving sends one message asking whether they want these, and nothing else reaches them unless they say yes — so add people who are expecting it. If somebody loses that message you can send it again straight away from the same screen, up to three times. Each of them can stop their own copies at any time without affecting yours.

If somebody never answers, we remove their address after 14 days. We would rather not hold the email of a person who never agreed to hear from us, and an address sitting there unanswered for months is not waiting — it is abandoned.

Time Zone

Your time zone changes the times we show you — when the daily check ran, when a lookup happened. Your daily ranking figures stay counted in UTC, because each night’s check is named after the day it belongs to rather than the hour it ran.

Data Exports

Settings → Data Exports gives you your nightly rank positions — desktop and mobile, for every night we have checked — and every audit, as CSV files you download. A night we could not check is not in the file at all, and a night you were not in the top 100 has an empty position rather than a made-up number: the same two states you see on your dashboard.

Settings That Live Somewhere Else

Also on Settings, above these — choosing your Canary Pages. That check runs once a day.

Common Questions

Can I Change the Email Address on My Subscription?

Yes, under Account Email on the Settings screen. It takes two steps: the new address has to click a link before anything moves, and the address the subscription is currently under is told at the same time, with a link to stop it. The address is how a subscription is proved to be yours, so a change nobody notices is how a subscription quietly leaves its owner.

What Happens to My History If I Move to a Different Website?

It is archived, and the new site starts from nothing. We do not carry audits or rankings across, because they describe a different website and a merged chart would be true of neither.

Does Renaming My Site Change Anything We Measure?

No. It changes what your dashboard and emails call the site, and nothing else. No score, no ranking and no check is affected.
